Depending on whether or not your car is repairable, you will take the following steps:
Repairable Vehicle
Obtain an estimate from a body shop and agree with the adjuster on the cost of repairs prior to having the vehicle fixed. The adjuster may pay you directly or pay the body shop for the cost of repairs.
Unrepairable Vehicle
If the car is a total loss, you are entitled to the fair market value of the vehicle plus registration expenses. The adjuster will tell you the estimated value which you can verify online through Kelley Blue Book.
Rental Car
The insurance company must pay for a rental car until your car is repaired or you have reached an agreement on the fair market value to replace the car. If the accident is your fault and your insurance company is covering the damage, you will receive a rental car if you have rental car coverage stated in your policy.
Other Property Damage
If there is any other property damage that is the result of the accident such as broken glasses, car seats, or other items, agree on the value to replace it with the insurance adjuster.
